Below are some recently released materials from Environment America and Sierra Club. The fact sheet highlights the damages done to coastal tourism and fishing in the Gulf of Mexico after BP’s Deepwater Horizon spill. The report emphasizes the value of coastal business and tourism across the country and how such business exceeds the value of oil and natural gas extraction in coastal counties.
Today’s briefing focused on the billions of dollars of subsidies given to the oil and gas industry. For those who couldn’t make it, here are some materials from the briefing:
On April 12, 2011, NRDC hosted a briefing highlighting the impacts and legacy of last year’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The briefing included a sneak preview of a 22-minute film about the spill as well as perspectives from Gulf residents who are still reeling from the disaster. The first of a planned six congressional briefings focused on the oil and gas industry’s impacts to public health. Collectively, the six briefings will examine the consequences of our addiction to oil and fossil fuels and will explore ways to move the United States beyond oil.
